Engineering is one of the broadest fields of study. There are many subdivisions of engineering that you could choose from. The choice on what to pursue depends on your interest. The field is actually so broad that you may be unable to cover all the types unless you visit various university and college websites to see everything that they have to offer. The careers that you can pursue once you have a degree in engineering are also many.

Civil engineering is one of the more popular fields of engineering. It deals with design, construction and supervision of roads, bridges, railways and other infrastructure. Civil engineers are required to go through five years of study before they can be registered by the relevant body and given the right to bear the name engineer. In some parts of the world, after the five-year degree program, you still have to work and gain experience before you can be formally registered by the engineering regulatory body in your country.
Electrical engineering, as the name suggests, deals with the flow of electricity. This therefore deals with the wires, connectivity and electric grids. This is very diverse because electricity is present in many places: in buildings, on roads, in gadgets and devices. An electric engineer can therefore comfortably fit in any of these sectors as long as their services are needed.
Mechanical engineering deals with machinery. Some people classify cars under this specialization but it actually is not. Automotive engineers and mechanics are different from mechanical engineers. Mechanical engineering deals with heavy duty machinery such as factory equipment and ships for those who have specialized in marine mechanical engineering.
Materials engineers are tasked with figuring out how different materials are used and combined to form various products. Nuclear engineers deal with how energy and radiation can be leveraged. They deal with nuclear cores and reactors that generate power. The stability of such cores is maintained by the work of nuclear engineers. Their work is also evident in various medical equipment that makes use of radiation. As earlier stated, there are many different types of engineering that one can pursue and each has a place in industry. However, you can still opt for environmental engineering, biomedical engineering and other types that are not included in this list.
